Even if you do not use the Internet to get your work done, you can certainly find hundreds of ways to spend your free time on it. But is being online all the time an eco-friendly use of your free time? It may turn you into a hermit, but at least in a way you are doing your part in saving the environment, right? The Internet is a very cool place to be hooked into. Even if you do not use the Internet to get your work done, you can certainly find hundreds of ways to spend your free time on it. You can listen to music, watch videos, chat with friends, read blogs, play online games, and so many other things. It is so easy to spend entire blocks of your time just being online.

But is being online all the time an eco-friendly use of your free time? At first glance, it does not seem like it. At least you are not using fossil fuels and you are not emitting carbon exhaust into the air
while driving around town. It may turn you into a hermit, but at least in a way you are doing your part in saving the environment, right?

Well, you may find this tidbit interesting. There are studies made by researchers that a single search on Google can create one to 10 grams of carbon dioxide emissions. That is just one search. Google has reported that as of 2006, 200 million searches are being made on its search engine on the average per day. Ten grams of carbon dioxide emissions per search session multiplied by 200 million searches - that is definitely a lot.

The figure only refers to Internet searches. It does not give any figures yet on the carbon emissions created by online games, spending time on social networking sites, instant messaging, and other popular activities done on the Internet. It does not count the amount of emissions created by a computer that is continuously on all day.

So, spending all your free time online may not really be an eco-friendly use of your time at all. Thankfully, there are so many other ways that you can have fun during your free time that are environmentally friendly as well. You can try having a leisurely stroll at the park, go jogging, ride a bike or hang out with your friends. You do not have to bring your car; you can always carpool or take the public transport.
