Eskom needs to embark on a massive energy efficiency drive to avert the threat of further load-shedding and blackouts, the Independent Democrats (ID) said on Tuesday. The ID's energy spokesman Lance Greyling said studies done by the Energy Research Centre have shown that the country could save about 12 percent of the electricity it currently used through a comprehensive energy efficiency campaign. An energy efficiency campaign could save in excess of three and a half thousand megawatts of electricity, a figure which was equivalent to the power output of two Koeberg power stations, Greyling said. Incentives and subsidies must be given to consumers to use variable speed motors, energy efficient lighting and solar water heaters. "The advantage of energy efficiency measures is that they also contribute to combating climate change and reducing South Africa's disproportionately high greenhouse gas emissions," he said. Earlier Eskom said that it would embark on routine maintenance at Koeberg power station next week. "It's an agonising decision sometimes [to do routine maintenance], but we have to take a long term view ... the alternative is unthinkable... massive load shedding..." said Eskom spokesman Andrew Etzinger. Koeberg will be closed from next week until late April for routine maintenance and refuelling. Etzinger said Eskom was trying to do as much maintenance as possible during summer months, when electricity demand was low. Source: Sapa |
