The Green Scorpions have been so successful that a UK, SA partnership to train them will be extended by two years, the environmental affairs department said on Wednesday.

In the three years since their inception, the number of inspectors working for the  environmental crime fighters has increased from 26 to 900, said Moses Rannditsheni, spokesman for deputy environment minister Joyce Mabudafhasi.

"The high rate of environmental crimes prosecution bears testimony to the high quality of training provided," he said.

In less than two years 180 magistrates had also been trained in adjudicating environmental crimes. This had since been integrated into the Justice College's standard programme for magistrates.

The UK and Wales Environment Agency helped establish the Green Scorpions by providing training, which included technical and on-site support as the inspectors started inspections at big industrial facilities. The Justice College, the University of Pretoria and the Endangered Wildlife Trust also contributed.
