"No Plastic Bag Day" to go Weekly in Hong Kong Print E-mail
Monday, 15 October 2007
Hong Kongers will be asked to further curb their love affair with the ubiquitous plastic bag when a "no plastic bag day" initiative goes weekly, a newspaper reported Monday.

The development followed a survey by the environmental group Greener Action that showed 53 per cent of Hong Kong's people wanted the current monthly scheme to go weekly, the South China Morning Post said.

Eighteen companies with 1,481 outlets plan to participate in the weekly bag-free day, which starts Tuesday. They include the Mannings drug store chain, Circle K and 7-Eleven convenience stores, and the book seller Dymocks.

Greener Action executive director Angus Ho said the survey, which polled 326 people across Hong Kong, found 19 per cent wanted every day to be plastic bag-free.

Stepping up the war on plastic bags came as the government plans to introduce a 50-Hong-Kong-cent (6.4-US-cent) levy on each plastic bag.

According to government statistics, Hong Kong uses 23 million plastic bags - more than three bags per person - every day.

The first phase of the plastic bags tax will cover 2,000 shops, including supermarket chains and convenience stores, and could be implanted by the end of next year.

Commenting on the planned levy, Ho said: "We think the tax is a good thing, but at the same time we need education. This is not only about paying money. The public should have a green habit. We need to increase the frequency of 'no plastic bag day' and have more retailers from different industries participate."
