Johannesburg, 5 November 2007 - South Africans across the country are have celebrated the Guinness World Records Annual today.

Collect-a-Can and MySchool in association with Pan Macmillan launched on 1 October the world's first record attempt to collect the greatest number of cans for recycling in a month. Not only do schools generate income, but it's also a valuable lesson for learners to appreciate the environment and understand the part they can play in keeping it clean -recycling resources can be fun!

This pilot project is running for the first year in Gauteng and the Western Cape, but will be rolled out to other provinces next year, should it be successful. The awards ceremony for the winning schools will took place today (5th November) and was attended by a Guinness World Records adjudicator.

"With this project we aim to highlight the importance of environment management in schools to urge the youth to get involved at an early stage. It is important that it forms part of what they learn in schools," said Funani Mujono, Collect-a-Can Managing Director.

He said his company has been involved in schools, through the schools competition, for a number of years and wished to continue the partnership in education.

He said that he was happy with the participation because the number cans recovered was quite impressive.

"We estimated a total of 2.2bm cans to be produced in 2007. The 2m cans for the Guinness Record is just below 10% of the total production for 2006. This phenomenal given the spread of the competition, we could  achieve 90% recovery rate if everyone put in an effort similar to the one put in by these schools. We would like to thank all participating schools," Mujono said.

Other record attempts include:

5 November - The highest tandem parasail at Inanda Dam, KwaZulu-Natal by Steve and Sarah Camp.

6 or 7 November - The longest bra chain, in Johannesburg, an attempt to promote an awareness of breast cancer by Sho-sho-loza Marketing.

Recent successes:

2 July - Kelloggs largest bowl of cereal.

14 October - The biggest pumpkin pie ever made.

This record was set by South African farmers and beat the American record for a pie of 920kg with their own weighing 1150kg. To make the pie, four hundred litres of milk, 240 dozen eggs, five kilograms of seasoning and 124 kg of custard powder were used.
