A Johannesburg potato tour will take place over the next three weeks, culminating in a bid to build the highest tower made of potatoes in Africa, the Johannesburg Fresh Produce Market (JFPM) and Potatoes SA (PSA) said on Thursday.

"[PSA and JFPM] will attempt to build the highest potato tower in Africa as the final act of their Johannesburg Tour to promote the nutritional value and versatility of potatoes on Saturday 6 December.

"The attempt comes as a fitting end as the International Year of the Potato (IYP) draws to a close."

The United Nations declared 2008 the International Year of the Potato. The year specifically aims to draw attention to the role the potato can play in helping reach Millennium Development Goals, said the two organisations.

In Gauteng, before the potato's final pit stop at the Soweto Wholesale Market on December 6, it will visit Kathlehong, Diepsloot, Orange Farm.

JFPM marketing head Thomas Mawasha said the tour was designed to promote the potato as an alternative to the traditional starch staples of rice and maize.

"It's a great opportunity for us to educate the public about good nutrition and dispel the myths surrounding potatoes as a 'fattening' food."

He said potatoes were an affordable option during a time food prices were rising.

PSA marketing manager Etienne Booyens said informal traders were a crucial target audience on the tour as they brought up to 50 percent of potatoes sold at the market for repacking into smaller packages and resale.

Booyens said the potatoes needed for the record attempt would be donated and then distributed afterwards to needy communities throughout Soweto.
