This particular book is presented as being a healthy food cookbook and contains fifty "wholesome and delicious" recipes. It is also packed with information on using food to combat illness and promote health. The recipes book are divided, quite traditionally, into Breakfasts and Brunches, Soups and Light Meals, Main Dishes, Salads and Side Dishes and finally Desserts. The most interesting section of the book is the well researched and highly informative sections on food and how they relate to different aspects of keeping your body healthy. There are many topics including here such as essentials nutrients, phytochemicals (a compouoods that Heal - Nicola Graimesnd found in plants and fruits which research has identified as playing a crucial role in preventing cancer, heart disease, arthritis and many other health problems), boosting your immune system, looking after your digestive system, protecting against cancer, eating with diabetes and emotional health. I've yet to try all of the recipes but I have to say the ones I have were successful and as promised - delicious. The instructions were easy to follow and never did I feel the methods required were beyond my meagre culinary skills. I also enjoyed the inclusion of a picture with every single recipe (something all too many cook books neglect) and the chance to tempt my taste buds before deciding what was on the evening's menu. One of the nice touches in this book are the little "Health Benefits" inserts that accompany the majority of the recipes. Kedgeree for example, one our household favourites, tells us that the lentils included are good for the heart because of their ability to lower cholesterol levels in the body, and the rice is a high-carbohydrate food that provides sustained amounts of energy making it a perfect food for the start of the day, and it also can help to ease diarrhoea and upset stomachs. I certainly appreciated knowing that what I was eating was good for me and, being a sucker for facts, enjoyed learning a little bit whilst I cooked. If you're keen to expand your recipe repertoire and think that you and your family could do with a few more healthy options then I think you'll enjoy and benefit from this book. |
