Nutrition for LifeWe all know that our lifestyle and what we eat can influence how we feel, our ability to concentrate, our ability to enjoy life, our resistance to infection, and our risk of developing serious diseases. There’s plenty of information with websites, books, magazines, even food packaging offering us advice on the subject but it can often be overwhelming and confusing, “Nutrition for Life - The definitive guide to eating well for good health” makes it all clear.

This is a book for everyone, whether you’re single, married, have young or older children, are healthy or suffering from a chronic medical condition, you will gain short-term and long-term health benefits from reading this book and by putting into effect the advice it contains.

The first chapter of the book “Assess your health and lifestyle” explores our eating and lifestyle habits. It includes a great questionnaire which makes you think about many areas of your lifestyle that you can improve up, and importantly, offers advice on how to make those changes.

“Food for life” and “Elements of a healthy diet” look at what food is made of, why we need it and what makes up a healthy diet.

“Eating for the time of your life” is a very useful chapter that covers the nutritional needs of humans from new born babies, toddlers, adolescents, adults, and offers advice on staying healthy through to old age.

In the “The truth about weight control” the importance of managing our weight is explored. It comprehensively covers the major diets (many of which we’d never heard of, can there really be so many?) with information on how each claims to work, what’s involved and most importantly, whether it’s a healthy option?

One of our favourite chapters is “Food as medicine” which looks at the relationship between food and illness. Many of the more common ailments are covered from cardiovascular and respiratory disorders, digestive disorders (such as irritable bowel syndrome, constipation and celiac disease), bone and joints disorders, diabetes, food allergies, migraines and headaches, and cancer. Each is explained, with useful jargon busting, and advice is given how to prevent, manage/control them.

In the chapter “The food you buy” practical advice is given on how to make the best and healthiest choices when shopping, hints on comparing products, and tips on storing, preparing, and cooking the food when you get home.

The final chapter “Food analysis” is a comprehensive reference chart that details the nutritional information for the majority foods you’re ever likely to eat, it’s a valuable and easy to use resource.

A lot of effort has gone into making what could have been a dry and technical topic very interesting and easy to read. It’s colourful, full of interesting diagrams and charts and clearly illustrates the impact that nutrition has on our bodies and our lives.

Many families own an A-Z Guide to Family Health, this book should be sitting next to it, its a definitive guide and will last a family for years to come.
