In The Holford 9-Day Liver Detox, international bestselling author and nutrition expert Patrick Holford uses scientific findings to show you how to detoxify your body in nine days. If you want to lose weight, boost your energy levels and become clear headed then this book is for you.
The book concentrates on the role of the liver in helping your body detox with the first chapter explaining why it’s such an important organ. This section also describes the effect of toxins on your body and the symptoms or ailments you maybe experiencing due to an excess of them.
The detox itself is built around five bad habits that we need to break and five good habits that we need to adopt. No surprises that two of the bad habits are abandoning caffeine and alcohol, in fact none of the bad habits should raise any eyebrows as they have been widely publicised by the media, nutritionists, doctors and homeopaths for many years now. Anyone serious about detoxing should therefore not be fighting giving these up, it is after all, only for nine days.
The good habits once again seem pretty logical with food and drink choices that most people trying to live a healthy balanced lifestyle would already have incorporated or are trying to incorporate into their lives.
Recipes are provided for the full nine days, with plans for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks, and we did find that they sounded quite appealing. You don’t however need to follow these rigidly as there are enough guidelines so you can formulate your own recipes and plan. The food consumed during the detox is pretty much limited to fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds and fish, most of which are widely available, however a quick visit to your local health food store might be necessary to pick up the less common nuts and seeds that are mentioned. There are also suggestions on how a vegetarian or vegan may also follow this detox plan.
Particularly useful in this book is the Detox Check questionnaire which is divided into; energy check, digestion check, detox check, and pain check. It doesn’t take long to answer all the questions and tally up your points to give you an overview of exactly what potential positive impact undertaking the detox will have on your body. The book also suggests completing the questionnaire again at the end of the nine days to enable you to assess the difference that the detox has made.
At the end of the book, and after you’ve completed the detox, you are given advice on how to re-introduce your bad habits slowly (if you’re really missing your caffeine fix for example), this will help you to make informed decisions on which ones to keep and which ones should probably go for good.
