Great Speeches in HistoryThis podcast presented by LearnOutLoud.com is devoted to the great thinkers, statesman and other public orators that have graced us throughout history with their words. Many self-help gurus suggest immersing yourself in the lives of successful people and what better way to do this than by listening to their famous speeches.

This is a relatively new podcast and so there are only nine episodes to download at present but there are already some great episodes to choose from including; Martin Luther King’s “I Have A Dream” speech, Nelson Mandela’s first speech after his release from prison, and Winston Churchill’s first speech as Prime Minister (which includes some of the most moving and stirring rhetoric you’re ever likely to hear). It’s inspiring stuff.

There is of course the odd episode that resonates deeply with the American cultural psyche, such as the baseball legend Babe Ruth’s farewell speech, that will leave many not familiar with the historical and cultural details of the land of the Stars and Stripes wondering what all the fuss is all about. The beauty of podcasts of course is that you don’t have to download everything and LearnOutLoud.com do make it clear what the content of each episode is so you can pick and choose according to your interests.

The sound quality of the podcasts naturally varies, with some of the audio recordings dating back over 60 years. We did find though that the hisses and crackles particularly present in Churchill’s speech definitely added to its authenticity and gives one a very real feeling of being present, huddled up to the wireless listening as though it were live, all of this of course added to the inspiring effect.

It’s disappointing that LearnOutLoud.com hasn’t included a preview list of upcoming podcasts, it would certainly whet our appetite to know that a speech from Gandhi or another from Madiba was coming up in a couple of weeks, but I guess this is just a small complaint.

So if you’re looking for a free source of inspiration that you can listen to in your car or on your iPod check out the ‘Great Speeches in History’ podcast.
