![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() It was a slow and lazy Saturday morning, good food and drink was required to get the weekend going, and so my wife and I headed down to Salvation Café in 44 Stanley Avenue, Milpark, Jo'burg. We started our meal with a quite intense looking beetroot, pear and carrot juice (R20) (freshly squeezed of course) which may sound like a bizarre blend (I am fascinated with unusual juice mixes) but it was actually a really nice combo of flavours. Initially there was a "whoah" from the intense fresh flavour, the overriding conclusion was that not only was the juice surprisingly delicious but it also shouted "this is good for you!" For the main course we chose one of the popular vegetarian dishes - Beetroot & Eggplant Coconut Curry (R49). This, like the juice we had earlier, is full of the most wonderful colour but it was the delicate taste with wonderful freshness coming to the fore that really impressed. This was served with basmati rice and small side dishes of chilli and pawpaw, which complimented the curry superbly. To accompany this we went for the Eggplant Puree with Pita Bread (R38), which was served with a delicate natural yogurt dip containing cucumber chunks, and sweetmilk cheese on the side. This probably wasn't the best choice to compliment the curry but we enjoyed it all the same. Other popular items on the menu (as indicated by our very kind waiter) are the Gourmet Burger (which is served with bacon, sweetmilk cheese, avocado and potato wedges), the Sirloin, Rocket and Parmesan Wrap (we saw a number of those go past). Popular breakfast dishes include Brie Omelette, and Caribbean Sweet French Toast (served with bananas, mixed berries, maple syrup and organic cream) - we're going to have to go back soon to try that one! Free range eggs and chicken, and where possible organic milk (apparently you can't make decent cappuccino froth with it) are featured throughout the menu. We were also pleased to see organic wine on the list (Ruins from the Bon Cap estate) and that all the wine is available by the glass. One of the aspects of Salvation Café that we especially enjoyed was the atmosphere, the clientele all seemed to be relaxed and having fun, it's a place to catch up with friends and leisurely converse over the most delightful food, children and babies also seem to be welcome. The simple down to earth décor definitely adds to this atmosphere and gives you the impression of being in your grandmother's kitchen, it's all warm and cosy and you just know that some good wholesome food is going to come your way. This is one of those all too rare restaurants/cafés that is dedicated to serving only the freshest most divine cuisine. As consumers we all too often settle for mediocre, eating at Salvation Café reminds you just how good food can be and makes you wonder why you ever settled for average. So if you're looking for a place to meet your friends for breakfast/brunch/lunch then head down to the Salvation Café we highly recommend it!
