![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This is, as the name suggests, a fabulous place to eat. The food is wonderful and it's such a great feeling knowing that everything is fresh, free of preservatives and additives and really good for you. I went there feeling tired and a bit under the weather but departed invigorated and full of life again - it certainly made me want to go back. The restaurant shares its premises with the Nutri Balance Wellness Centre in the Benmore Gardens Shopping Centre, Sandton. The owner, Ashley Latouf, took over the café six months ago and has since been perfecting the menu to suit her client's needs. Two of the most successful and highly popular changes that she has made are to offer a low GI breakfast and a buffet lunch. On the day we went, roasted butternut quiche, lentil patties with tahina, and apple & cranberry tart with cream were just a few of the delightful dishes on offer. As my lunch date and I arrived I overheard Ashley chatting to what I later found has been a regular visitor to her café for the past week, he was raving to her about the buffet - "Everyday I have something different and its just wonderful food!" We felt that we were in for a treat. Unfortunately having got there a little late and due to its popularity the buffet was finished. Not a problem though as the menu, which is largely vegetarian (with tuna and free range chicken featured as well), was full of some really tempting dishes and had great variety with freshly squeezed juices, smoothies, gluten and wheat free bread and muffins, sandwiches, salads, light meals and sugar free cakes. Indeed the menu stated that this variety is one of Ashley's key philosophies - "The wider the range of food that we eat the less likely we are to be deficient in any of the essential nutrients that our bodies need. Our menu supplies a mixture of food providing all these vital elements." Another aspect of the menu I really enjoyed was that each item not only had a description but also came with information about its nutritional benefits. The pear juice that I chose for example was for good for; getting a good source of natural sugar, constipation, the bladder, poor digestion, high blood pressure, obesity and skin disorders - and it tasted great too! When our food arrived I was delighted to discover how light and flavoursome my Red Lentil Burger was. It was topped off with a spicy tomato sauce and a crisp and crunchy salad - I'm hoping to get the recipe for it off Ashley. My date chose a Tuna sandwich with grilled Aubergine, Tofunaise and Avocado Pear which was served on health bread. This homemade tofunaise is a tofu equivalent to mayonnaise which I'm pleased to say was really tasty. We were both impressed with Ashley friendliness and her warm smile. I've also heard that she's always full of advice for her customers on how and what to eat. One of her favourite tips seems to be the use of wheatgrass, which she offers in small tots at the café, she enthused about its healing powers telling us that not one of her staff has been sick since she starting making them drink it at the first sign of illness. If you're looking for a new place to try out for breakfast or lunch and want to leave feeling healthly, satisfied and full of energy then I highly recommend that you try out The Fabulous Food Co.
