The pendulum is an ancient divination tool that was used by Egyptians, Chinese and Romans. Fans of the hit TV show "Charmed" might think they are only used for scrying for demons but really they can be used for many applications like finding your car keys, deciding what you should wear, finding water beneath the ground and even making a medical diagnosis of a patient's ailment.

The art of using pendulums is called dowsing, a term which also encompasses the use of other dowsing tools such as; y-rods used to locate water, l-rods used to explore earth energies and bobbers used to locate oil. For the scope of this article we will restrict ourselves to pendulums which may be used to answer questions of a more personal nature.

There are many theories as to why pendulums work. Some believe the user, being in a meditative state, is part of the collective unconscious, where all answers reside. Others believe that the answers are coming from your own sub-conscious. Yet others views refer to the ability of all dowsing methods to be able to pick up and amplify electromagnetic energy.

The beauty of pendulums lies in their simplicity. They consist of a weight attached to a chain or length of string. The weight is usually made of wood, stone or crystal and is symmetrical in shape. There are a huge variety of pendulums available for purchase in esoteric shops but you can make your own, simply attach a suitable weight to a length of string or chain that is 15-20 cm long. The weight can be anything from a ring, pendant or bolt - it just needs to be heavy enough to keep the string or chain taut but light enough so you don't strain your arm from holding it.

Unlike other methods of divination like tarot or runes, where you have to learn the meanings of many different symbols, dowsing just deals with simple responses of "yes", "no" and "maybe". This does not in anyway suggest that you can master dowsing overnight, like anything it takes time and practise.

Preparing your pendulum
Before you first use your pendulum, whether you've purchased or made it, you will need to cleanse and attune it. You can cleanse your pendulum by; holding it under running water, leaving it overnight in the moonlight or immersing it in salt (this is not suitable for some crystals).

To attune your pendulum to your own energies, hold it in your hands and focus all of your attention on it during a ten to fifteen minute meditation. Keep your pendulum on your person as you go about your usual business - make sure you keep it in a pouch or covered with a cloth to protect it from outside energies. You are now ready to use your pendulum.

Using your pendulum
You will need to sit at a table where you can write your questions and answers. Choose a spot where you will not be disturbed, by man or pet. You should also be away from any electrical equipment.

The first time you use your pendulum you will need to determine how it indicates the various responses of "yes", "no" and "maybe". On a piece of paper draw a circle at least 15cm in diameter. Draw two lines that dissect the circle, one vertically and the other horizontally so that the lines are at right angles to each other. Mark the centre of the circle. You may use the circle and lines as a point of reference.

Once you have brought together your pendulum, pen and paper, sit with your limbs uncrossed and both your feet touching the ground. Take a few deep breaths to get yourself into a meditative state, or use any method that works for you.

Hold the string or chain in your dominant hand, between the thumb and index finger about 9cm above the weight (referred to as a bob). You may need to hold the bob with your other hand to make it stationery. Position your pendulum above the central mark and ask it either aloud or in your mind to show you "yes". The pendulum should start to move, if it doesn't simply take a few deep breaths and try again, you may need to be quite patient. When it does move note the motion that it makes, it might be back and forth in front of you, side-to-side, clockwise or even anti-clockwise. Now repeat the process to determine "no" and "maybe".

Now that you have determined the motions for each of the possible answers you're ready to start asking questions. Start with the simple stuff so you can become accustomed to using your pendulum. You can ask yes/no type questions or a series of chain questions, for example "Are my car keys in the kitchen?" If you get a no, you can then try another room. If you get a yes you can ask further questions to pin-point the location. "Are they in the fridge?" You get the idea.

If you find you're getting maybe answers or no movement from your pendulum at all you may need to make your question more specific. Alternatively you're not meant to know the answer or your mind isn't in the correct mental state, you may have overdone it and you're tired.
