Sound therapy works on the principle that everything in the universe is in a constant state of vibration. The speed of this vibration will determine its frequency. Apply this to our bodies and we find that all the cells and even the various organs in our body also vibrate and resonate at different frequencies.

It is believed that each of our chakras also has a certain frequency and that we can use music and sound to stimulate a resonance in a particular chakra which will in turn promote its spin, encouraging the flow of energy and ultimately balance all of the chakras.

Try the two exercises below to balance your own chakras and experience for yourself the possibilities of sound therapy.

Vowel sounds
ImageCertain vowel sounds are associated with each of the seven different chakras that are aligned along our body. The vocalisation of each of these vowel sounds will stimulate a resonance in the related chakra and encourage a balanced state.

It's a good idea to find somewhere quiet to try this exercise. Start by closing your eyes and taking a few long deep breaths concentrating on feeling completely relaxed.

When you're feeling calm and focused take one more deep breath, choose a comfortable note that is just below the middle of your vocal range and sing each of the vowel sounds that are shown in the diagram on the right (start with the base chakra at the bottom).

Whilst you're doing this try to imagine in your mind the colour that is associated with that chakra and see it filling your vision. Keep singing on this note with this vowel sound for about 2-3 minutes, taking breaths and singing the note again when you need to.

You may notice that you feel the part of the body associated with the chakra that you are stimulating resonating. It's a funny feeling and a good indication that this exercise is working.

Repeat this process for each of the chakras, moving up to a slightly higher note with each new vowel. There are seven vowels and chakras to go through in total so don't go up too high with each step. If you don't have much time to fit this exercise in you can also limit how long you spend on each of them, obviously the more time you dedicate to each chakra the more you'll feel the benfits.

Balancing your chakras with doh, ray, mi
You can try this exercise anywhere; in your car, in the bath, by yourself or with a friend or partner, it really doesn't matter. The more you do it the easier you'll find it and the more in balance your chakras and your body will become.

If you don't know the "Doh, ray, mi" song then don't panic and don't for a minute think that I'm going to get you to behave like a Von Trapp child in the Austrian Alps, this exercise is far simpler than that. All you have to do is be able to sing a scale of eight notes which, despite what you may be thinking to yourself, anyone can do. For each of these notes you will simply sing doh, ray, me, far, so, la, te, doh, moving one step up the scale with each word.

Pick a low note, near the bottom of your register where you can sing comfortably without straining. Close your eyes, take a long deep breath and sing 'doh' on this note. Try and keep the volume and the tone of the note steady, stop before you run out of breath and can't sustain this steadiness anymore.

Repeat this process for each of the notes of the doh, ray, me scale, moving up one note in the major scale for each word. Whilst you're singing the notes you should notice the relevant area of your body, where the associated chakra is located, resonating. For example, when you sing 'doh' your root chakra should resonate.

As this exercise doesn't take long it's a good idea, if you have time, to repeat it a few times, the more you do it the better the benefits will be.
