![]() ![]() Throughout the ages, man has used dreams as a tool to interpret aspects of inner feelings and messages from the Ancestors, Angels and Guides. We all dream, whether we remember these dreams or not. During our dreamtime, our logic or consciousness shuts down and we dream our most vivid dreams during a phase of our sleep known as REM (Rapid Eye Movement). During this period our subconscious is active, almost like when we experience deep meditation, and it is during this phase, that we experience emotions that may be unexpressed, we receive messages from our Guides and also loved ones that have passed on and we are sometimes able to view events that are still to come. This happens because our subconscious is our connection to the other side. We are all interlinked on this level and our rational thoughts do not interfere during this time. Our Ancestors, Guides and Angels connect to us through symbolism. Our dreams are often symbolic and may at times make no sense to us, for this reason we need to learn to interpret our dreams so that we have a better understanding of ourselves and our relationships. For example: In African culture, dreaming of the snake is a symbol that represents their Ancestors, so this is a good omen. If a snake comes into the home, this means they are protected. However a person that fears snakes will dream of them and it may mean they need to watch out for false people around them. We need to build up a dream library of our own interpretations to get clarity about our dreams. For some of us, that don’t remember our dreams, powerful suggestive affirmations before bedtime, may do the trick. ‘I will remember my dreams when I wake up’ may help, but this needs to be repeated every night to work. It is important to feel relaxed before bedtime, a herbal tea such as camomile or lavender drops on the pillow can induce this state of peace. When we wake up, we need to spend a few moments in this relaxed state and allow ourselves to remember what we dreamt about and before we get up, to write it down. We need to remember how we felt during the dream, the colours, objects, sounds and smells, as well as any recurring images for these are all indicators of powerful dreams that bring through a message. Dreams that are not vivid or emotionally vague may not have specific meanings, as they are just a mental form of release from the happenings of the day. Recurring dreams are often a signal from our minds that something needs attention and the dream will repeat itself until the underlying issue is sorted. Nightmares occur in a similar way, as these are mostly fears that are lying deep in the subconscious mind, often going back to childhood or a trauma that happened. A common nightmare is being chased by something or someone unknown, a monster perhaps, but the dreamer cannot see this person or thing. The dream feels endless and the terror grows as it seems impossible to outrun this pursuer. Many of my clients who have worked through their fears, by doing the Guided Visualization sessions and meditating on releasing these fears, have discovered that when this dream occurs again, they are able to face their pursuer and that this is in fact often an image of themselves or there is nothing behind them. We need to realise, that we can control our dreams and we can actually change the outcome or become aware that we are only dreaming. This takes practise and patience and we need to give our subconscious mind the instructions to allow us to be in control while we dream. Simple instructions are best, we can say to ourselves the following: ‘I am in control of my dreams and I am able to intervene at any time.’ This is an example of a dream interpretation, submitted by Anna B from Cape Town. Anna wrote to me and told me about a dream that has re-occurred for a number of years. Her dream always takes her to a place where she is high above the ground and she is trying to climb a structure that does not feel or look very safe. She compared it to the structures in the Dr Seuss books. Although the scenery and the people are not always the same, she is either climbing up or down one of these precarious tower – like structures. She feels frightened and somehow gets stuck and she cannot continue. Her fear causes her to freeze and she can’t move. At this point she wakes up sweating and frightened and at times she has fallen off, but wakes up before she reaches the ground. My response to her dream was that she often feels insecure in her life, especially when she needs to make decisions or when she has to face obstacles. During these times she feels vulnerable and alone. When she climbs up, she is in a period of her life, where she has to face some challenges, when she climbs down, she is moving away from a space that she may have outgrown and is ready to continue to something new. Her subconscious mind is pointing this out to her. All these periods signify change, she is afraid of this and does not trust herself enough, that she actually has the power to make the right decisions or overcome her obstacles. During this period, she started to work with her Angels and I suggested that she uses positive affirmations to strengthen her relationship with herself and regain her power to believe in herself more. She wrote to me after this, as she had another dream where she was again climbing a precarious structure and as she reached a point where she got stuck, a voice spoke to her and told her that she could overcome this, as it was only a dream she felt a feeling of peace within her which made her feel calm and as she looked up there were people in the surrounding towers cheering her on. She realised that these people represented her Guides as well as the people in her life that were there to support her, but that through her fears, she had cut herself off from them. This dream never occurred again and she is happier, more in control of her life and less afraid of decisions and obstacles. As we learn to understand ourselves better through our dreams, we also connect to each other on a deeper level and dreams should not be seen as something to fear, but rather as an indicator of what we may need to address or work through. Enjoy the dream work and do not complicate your interpretations With Love and Light Tanja
