Everyday our senses are overloaded with information. Just think about the drive to work - your brain's working overtime just to keep a steady distance from the cars around you, obeying all the myriad of traffic signs and lights that guide your way. That's not the end of it; you turn on your radio to entertain your ears whilst your eyes take in the plethora of adverts that litter our streets. 'Buy this', 'do that', 'try this', 'this is the most effective', 'this is the best' - wow, it's a wonder how we manage to get to work in one piece at all without our eyes popping out of our head and our ears starting to bleed such is the sensory overload. And yet we do, it's just become part of our everyday existence. As a consequence we have lost touch with the other way of 'feeling', of being aware of the energies that we can't see but surround us all.

So the challenge is this - block out everything that your other fives sense are doing, what they are being bombarded with, and try and awaken a long forgotten and rarely (if ever used) sixth sense - the ability to sense and feel energy. Read on and we'll teach you how to do it, it's really not as hard as it sounds.

Preparation
It's a good idea to try and feel energy in its broadest sense before you try any of the exercises that I've described below. The best way to do this is to get out into nature; this maybe in your garden, in the park or on some country walk, the important factor is being as far away from the distractions of modern living as much as you possibly can.

When you're settled in your quiet space close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Breathe in all the way down to your toes and then feel your breath move up and out of your body as you exhale. Do this until you're feeling calm and relaxed.

Now open your eyes and allow your mind to take in all of your surroundings, absorb the rich and vibrant colours of the plants and flowers, the rich green of the leaves in the trees. Feel the breeze on your skin, enjoy the way that it dances on your face. If you wear glasses try taking them off, notice how your new sensory perception increases in awareness. When you're feeling completely aware of your surroundings and the energy around you, you can try the three exercises described below.

Get Your Body Ready
Do this before starting any of the exercises. Start by opening up the small power centres of your hand chakras. Do this by gently rubbing in a clockwise direction the palm of one hand with the thumb of the other. You may notice a slight tingling sensation across you hand. Repeat this with the opposite hand.

1. On Your Own
When you have opened up both of these chakras hold your hands in front of your chest, about a shoulder width apart with the palms facing each other. Now slowly bring them together. You should notice a point where you feel pressure between them; it might feel a bit like trying to put the same poles of two magnets together. This is the energy coming out of each of the hands and repelling against the other.

Now imagine the energy between your palms getting stronger and bigger. Let your hands come slightly further apart and then move them back together. Keep repeating this and work towards getting your hands further and further apart, all the time concentrating on making the energy between your hands larger and more powerful. Treat it like a game and have fun!

When you want to stop turn both of your palms upwards, place them in your lap and relax.

2. Energy Balls
This exercise works best with two people and is a wonderful way for couples to connect on a more spiritual level. It is also an ideal exercise to try in the bedroom or in the bath.

Start by setting the scene - light some candles and turn off any artificial lights, light a favourite incense stick, if you're having a bath put luxuriant oils or bubble bath in the water.

When you are both comfortable and relaxed in your space sit facing each other and look deeply into each other's eyes making sure that you are totally in the moment and 'with' the person. When you are both ready close your eyes and take some deep breaths, in the same way as you did in the preparation exercise.

When you are both ready open your eyes and re-establish eye contact. Hold the palms of each of your hands up to your partner. Move them together so that they are almost but not quite touching. Pull them apart again and slowly move your hands back together until you start to feel the energy between you.

Now try cupping your hands as if you were holding a ball and then gradually start to bounce your hands in and out. Both of you should concentrate on making the ball bigger and pushing it outwards so that it becomes harder to bring your hands together. As you do this you should notice the size of the energy ball between you get larger. Start this process slowly, as you get the hang of it you should be able to make it the size of a beach ball.

When you've made your ball as big as you can before it begins to lose its intensity you can bring it back down to the size of a soccer ball. Now try taking it in turns to very gently push your partner's hands back. Imagine that you are now giving energy (if you're the one pushing) and receiving it (if you're being pushed). As you get more confident try pushing the ball slightly harder.

A nice way to finish is for both of you to imagine the energy ball getting larger again, so much so that you can't hold it between you anymore and it starts to fill the room. This is a wonderful way to create a sacred space in which the two of you can enjoy being completely at one with each other.

3. Energy Stroking
If you have a cat, and hopefully a placid 'lap cat', then you can try this fun exercise. If you don't have one then you can always pop over to a neighbour's or friend's house and ask to borrow theirs.

When your cat is sitting down and relaxed, it doesn't matter if it's on a chair or on your lap, place your hands about 10cm above its fur. Start at its head and slowly 'virtually stroke' towards its tail. If your cat is responsive you may notice its back rise a little and it may even start to purr. Cats are very sensitive to the energy around them and it's quite funny to see them react like this.
