The Power of MantrasMantras, with their ability to still the busiest mind, are a simple and powerful tool in meditation.

The word Mantra can be translated as ‘Manas’ meaning ‘mind’, and ‘Tra’ meaning ‘try’ or ‘to free from’, a Mantra therefore is a tool used by the mind to free oneself from the mind.

Spoken, chanted, or mentally vocalised, the Sanskrit words in Mantras have no translation, they are about energy rather than meaning and it is the syllables of the words that create this energy, this in turn has a particular healing affect on the spiritual, physical and psychological body.

The principle of the effects of Mantras lies in the vibration that they cause. Every cell in our body is vibrating and any imbalance in this vibration will lead to ill health or dis-ease. The purpose of the Mantra is to bring the cells back into balance, to reprogram the vibrations into a state of health.

Mantras can be simple, from individual words to more complex phrases (which are often given by a Guru) and when repeated form the basis of a Mantra meditation. This is one of the easiest meditations that can be practised and because it can uttered silently in the mind can be used in any situation. It is also very effective in quietening and stilling the busiest mind.

There are a huge number of different Mantras each of which is based upon certain ‘seed’ sounds, simple words or syllables, also sometimes referred to as the “primordial sounds of nature”. Each of these might relate to a particular chakra along the body or relate to personal goals such as abundance or freeing from negativity.

Instructions for Mantra Meditation
Choose one of the simple Mantras listed below.

  • Find a quiet space (if possible) and spend some time chanting your chosen Mantra, this can either be out loud or in your mind. It is important not to repeat a mantra too much as it may cause adverse affects, it is generally considered that 10 minutes a day is a good place to start.
  • The Mantra should be repeated at a comfortable pace without pausing or breaking between each repetition.
  • Enjoy the sounds, subtleties and rhythms of the words, enjoy being in the moment.
  • If you find your mind wandering gently refocus it on the sounds of the Mantra observing the reaction of your body with each utterance.
