It has taken many thousands of years for the knowledge of crystals and their healing powers to be understood. The earliest records of healing with crystals date back to the ancient Egyptians, whilst traditional Chinese medicine and India's Ayurvedic tradition records healing with crystals from about 5,000 years ago. Today crystal healing therapy is undergoing a resurgence in popularity with a wider variety of crystals becoming increasingly available and more and more people training to be crystal healing therapists.

How do they work?
Although outward appearances may suggest that crystals are quite complex and haphazard in formation a closer examination will reveal that their basic structure does in fact consist of perfect geometric shapes, including triangles, squares, trapeziums, rectangles, rhomboids, parallelogram and hexagons. This perfect crystalline structure means that crystals vibrate and resonate at a constant frequency, collecting, focusing, and emitting electromagnetic energy.

A good example of modern science harnessing crystal energy is the piezoelectric effect. When a crystal, such as quartz for example, is subjected to compression it generates the energy source that is used in sonar and ultrasound. Indeed so powerful is the potential of ultrasound that not only can it be used to help medical staff to see inside the human body, generating pictures of growing foetuses for example, but it can also be used to cauterize wounds deep in the body or even destroy tumours without the need for invasive surgery.

What can they be used for?
A crystal's geometric shape and molecular structure determines its frequency of vibration and as such different crystals interact and resonate in sympathy with the organs or parts of the body that share the same frequency. Using a crystal on a related part of the body will promote healing in that area. For example, amber can be used to calm the nervous system, fluorite can be used to strengthen teeth and bones, whilst amethyst can be used to strengthen the immune system.

Crystals can also be used to help balance the chakras, treat low energy, and help in emotional issues such as tension, stress, depression and anxiety. They can also enhance intuition, attract wealth and increase mental abilities.

There are different ways to use crystals. Sometimes this can be passive, laying the crystals on or around the body, wearing them as jewellery or just keeping them in a pocket or on the desk. Other times it can be directed, for example moving a wand shaped crystal in a circular motion can focus its energy onto a particular section of the body.

Crystal Healing DIY
If you want to purchase your own crystals there are an abundance of good crystal shops across South Africa. You might have a particular ailment or problem that you'd like to address or maybe you want to use crystals to balance your chakras (a good place to start if you have no clue), the staff in the shop will hopefully be able to help you choose the right crystals. If they can't, or you don't want to reveal your problem, ask if they have a crystal directory or something similar that you can browse through. If they don't have any information at all then you're in the wrong shop!

When you have an idea of the crystal or crystals that you need then it's time to find the exact one for your purposes. Crystals come in all shapes and sizes, and can be raw, polished or tumbled (the shiniest and smoothest), the chances are that you'll have plenty of choice. A wand shape, for example, is good for directing healing onto a particular area of the body, and egg shapes are good for use on the reflexology points, whilst larger uncut raw crystal geodes are useful as ornaments.

Crystals for the chakras
If you've decided to have a go at balancing your chakras with crystals you can try using any of the stones listed below, you only need to choose one for each chakra. Place each of the crystals on or by the chakra's corresponding part of the body, you can then try one of your own meditations or try a Chakra Meditation. To find out where to place each crystals read the article 'A beginner's guide to the chakras'.

Chakras and a few of the related crystals -

  • Base - bloodstone, red jasper or smoky quartz
  • Sacral - carnelian, citrine or topaz
  • Solar plexus - golden beryl, tiger's eye or malachite
  • Heart - green quartz, green tourmaline or kunzite
  • Throat - amber, amethyst or turquoise
  • Third eye - lapis lazuli, garnet or azurite
  • Crown - clear tourmaline, purple sapphire or moldavite

Crystal Healing Therapist
It is possible to use crystals yourself but to experience the full potential and benefits of this therapy it's a good idea to try a healing session with a qualified therapist.

A crystal healing therapy session will normally take place on a massage table and you will be fully clothed. After determining the client's healing need the therapist will place carefully chosen crystals on or around the body in particular patterns, each layout and position designed to optimise the healing potential of the crystals and how they work in harmony together. Crystal wands may also be used on specific parts of the body. Upon the completion of a treatment the therapist may offer a crystal to the client which they can carry in a pocket or wear as jewellery to aid in the continuation of the healing process.

Whether you decide to try this therapy out for yourself or decide to make an appointment with a qualified therapist I hope you enjoy and benefit from this enchanting therapy.
