Understanding Reiki

What is Reiki
Reiki is an ancient form of natural healing. It works by stimulating the mechanisms that are in charge of your body’s maintenance. It is a non-religious, non-denominational and non-intrusive healing method.

The word “Reiki” can be translated as Universal Life Energy. It is this energy that makes us, trees and animals alive.

Your body already knows how to heal itself – if you cut your finger, you don’t have to do anything for it to heal. Your body automatically does what is necessary to heal the cut. Platelets rush to the site of the cut to staunch the bleeding, white corpuscles flood the area to combat infection and the skin regenerates over the wound. Soon there is nothing to show that you had ever injured yourself – and all of this with no conscious effort on your part.

What Reiki does is enhance this inherent ability to self-heal.

Energy
Your body is a mass of constantly moving energy. At the level of atoms we have a nucleus surrounded by spinning electrons. The space between nucleus and electrons is comparatively enormous and it is nuclear energy that holds the atoms together.

At a macro level, we have continuous impulses being transmitted along the nerves of our body and our brains are positively buzzing with electrical energy as we think, imagine, feel and experience our world.

Surrounding our solid body (although if you think about the spaces inside our atoms, we are more nothing than something) are other less solid bodies. If you think of our bodies as water, then these would be steam. Kirlian photography clearly shows these subtle fields of energy.

These bodies are closer to pure energy and flow around and through our solid bodies much as the lines of magnetism flow through and around a magnet. These bodies connect and communicate with our solid bodies via a system of energy centers, or chakras (the word “chakra” means spinning wheel).

The whole is an intricate system of interconnected energy.

Just as a magnetic field can be disrupted by a piece of metal, the flow of these energies can also become disrupted, and what affects the physical body will affect the less physical body and vice-versa.

When the flow of these energies is disturbed, we will experience a degree of dis-ease. The symptoms can be numerous – headaches, sleeplessness, listlessness, depression, anxiety and lack of concentration… the list is endless.

What Does Reiki Do?
Reiki works on all levels – physical, emotional and mental. It also has a beneficial effect on our physical and energy bodies. It has the ability to smooth out blockages in the natural energy flow and thus promote healing. It also promotes a feeling of deep relaxation which is conducive to physical healing. Emotional issues that are causing dis-ease can be brought to the surface where they can be dealt with.

It is an intelligent energy (would you expect anything less?) and flows to where it is needed to promote the highest good.

It works well with pregnant women, babies and complements traditional (allopathic) medicine.

Studies in hospital where nurses have been attuned to use Reiki show that Reiki has a remarkable effect on patients; reduced need for medication, quicker recovery time after surgery, less stress prior to surgery and has also been shown to benefit the nurses themselves.

How is Reiki Applied?
A Reiki practitioner is a person who has been attuned to channel this universal energy. The energy flows from the practitioner’s hands into the various energy centers of the body of the recipient. The practitioner places his hands on or above the energy centers and allows the energy to flow.

It is not necessary for the practitioner’s hands to touch the body of the recipient or for the recipient to remove any clothing.

A  Reiki treatment takes between 30 and 60 minutes.

Who can learn Reiki?
Reiki is an ability inherent in all of us, which means that anyone can learn to use Reiki. You need no formal qualification or abilities, just the desire to promote healing.

At a Reiki class you will learn about the theory and history of Reiki, hand positions for healing yourself or others and you will receive an attunement. An attunement is the method whereby your Reiki teacher passes on to the student the ability to channel Reiki.
