![]() The word Reiki comes from Rei, meaning universal or spiritual, and Ki, meaning life force or energy. This energy surrounds us and it is this energy that makes us alive. She noticed that when she treated a neighbour without charge, the treatment was not as effective as expected. When she treated another neighbour and charged for the treatment the results were more effective and long lasting. This matched Dr. Usui's experience. In this way the tradition of charging for Reiki treatment was reinforced. Mrs. Takata eventually moved to California, and before her death in 1980 she trained 22 Reiki Masters. What Does Reiki Do? Reiki enhances the body's natural ability to heal itself. It reduces stress, relaxes the body and clears energy blocks. It works at the physical, emotional and spiritual levels. Reiki can be used with benefit on plants and animals, and can also be used to neutralise impurities and pollutants in food and water. Studies reported by Dr. Dan J Benor (Reiki News Magazine, Fall 2003) show that Reiki significantly shortens recovery time in hospital patients, and reports have been received that medication and IV drips that have been treated with Reiki causes fewer side effects. Most importantly, Reiki can do no harm. What is a Reiki Attunement A Reiki attunement is a process by which the ability to channel Reiki is passed on to a student. The attunement is performed by a Reiki Master and has the effect of clearing any blockages to Reiki from the aura and opening the channels through which Reiki flows. There are three generally accepted levels of Reiki attunement: Reiki I (Physical Healing), Reiki II (Emotional Healing) and Reiki III or Master (Spiritual Healing). A sufficient period should be allowed between the various Reiki attunements. This is to allow the student to become used to the new energy flowing through his body and also to allow sufficient time for the student to decide whether he wishes to move on to the next level. It is also to allow time for the student to practice the techniques he has learned. Some recommend waiting at least two months between Reiki I and Reiki II and at least twelve months between Reiki II and Reiki III. These are only guidelines but serve to illustrate the point. Reiki I In Reiki I one learns the history and theory of Reiki as well as the hand positions and techniques for performing Reiki on others and on self. Scanning is also taught at this level. Reiki II Added to the skills gained in Reiki I, the students are given the Reiki symbols so that they can consciously use them in healing. The student is also taught methods for sending Reiki to remote locations (distance healing). Reiki III This adds an intuitive function to Reiki healing and the ability to attune others to use Reiki. In some disciplines, Reiki Teacher is distinct from Reiki Master and requires further study. Who Can Learn Reiki Actually, one does not 'learn' Reiki - it is an inherent ability in all of us. All that is needed is the basic techniques and the attunements. It is simple, harmless, non-intrusive and is simple to use. It is guided by intent and its effectiveness is not dependent on the practitioner's spiritual level or intelligence. With the above in mind, it follows that the fact that a person in a Reiki Master does not guarantee that he is of high moral fibre. Before embarking on Reiki training, you should be aware that there are in excess of fifty healing methods that use the word Reiki in their name. Many (including myself) believe that Reiki applies to the original Usui healing system. So it behoves the student to establish on what system of healing he is embarking. Questions that one could ask the practitioner are:

This is the powerful story of the author's struggle with Multiple Sclerosis and how a healer's unusual prescription of mindful altruism - to 'give away 29 gifts in 29 days' - ignited her energy, her happiness, and invited more abundance into her life.
