![]() "What is homeopathy?" If I decided to stand at a street corner in Johannesburg today and asked 50 people this question, I would get 50 very different answers... The reasons why this would make sense seem obvious:
A growing number of pathogens have developed resistance against even the strongest antibiotics and doctors are faced with the threat of being powerless against infectious diseases all over again. We are most definitely justified to ask why, with antibiotics and all the other "antis" causing almost as many problems as they solve, if not more, homoeopathy is not playing a more important role in primary health care today. The possible answers are manifold and often sensitive. It is no secret that the powerful pharmaceutical industry does not want to support a system which cannot yield exorbitant profits because the substances used cannot be patented. Mainstream medicine remains doubtful about homoeopathy, despite its obvious effectiveness, because doctors are still taught to think along the lines of Newtonian physics, above all Newton's Third Law which claims that 'To every action, there is - or at least there should be - an equal and opposite reaction'. This principle alone explains why in conventional medicine a disease and its symptoms are generally fought with weapons like anti-biotics, anti-inflammatories, anti-depressants etc. 'Antibiotic', translated from the Greek, means 'against life', and interestingly we are seeing today that too many antibiotics are gradually undermining the immune system which Samuel Hahnemann, the founder of homoeopathy, called the 'life-force'. Without a strong life-force, we become more and more defenceless against micro-organisms and pathogens. This is not only proved by the AIDS pandemic, but also by the large number of people suffering from debilitating conditions like Fibromyalgia, Glandular Fever and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME). Homeopathy, on the other hand, is energy medicine which cannot really be understood unless we accept Einstein's famous principle that matter and energy are interchangeable. The fact that this system was worked out and explained in detail by a German doctor in the late 18th and early 19th century, means that its creator was far ahead of his time. Energy medicine today is widely accepted and includes modalities such as acupuncture and polarity therapy. I can only recommend that you give them a try, ideally before you have exhausted all the other, potentially damaging options and before the illness is too far advanced. The earlier after the onset of symptoms a well-trained homoeopath is consulted, the better the chances of a cure. It is also important to remember that homoeopathy, just like every art or skill, can be practised at many different levels: the easiest and most popular, but definitely not the best form of homoeopathy is sold or prescribed as "complexes"; these consist of up to 20 different remedies combined in one product. This is not what is generally referred to as "classical homeopathy" and is often the reason why it is claimed that "homeopathy doesn't work". The success of homeopathic treatment is based on how accurately the symptom picture of the patient is matched with the healing power of one, or at the most two, different remedies which should be given in alternation and not together. This system, accurately applied, can produce miraculous improvements even in potentially serious illnesses such as asthma, eczema, duodenal ulcers, hypertension etc. Applied preventatively and consistently over a long period of time, homoeopathy provides one of the most stable foundations for a high level of vitality and health.
