A Turn in the BoxThe first time I sat in an ozone box, I was surprised at my instant awareness that my body was going through something unusual. I felt a strange kind of whooshing feeling in my head – it was neither dizziness nor a speedy feeling like I get from caffeine. Rather, it was just a pleasant buzz.

Britta, who owns the studio where I went for ozone treatment, stayed in the room with me while I was in the box, because apparently some people can get claustrophobic, but I didn’t at all. Other than the buzzing, I felt comfortably warm and found that my mind tended to wander a bit. I would lose the thread of things that I was saying to Britta, but she just smiled patiently while I rambled to her about nothing much at all.

Ozone is purported to do all sorts of wonderful things for the human body. It boosts immunity, assists in weight loss and pain reduction, helps with insomnia, improves circulation and detoxes the skin. Clients sit in a sauna box that fills with warm steam to open the pores, and then dosed with ozone gas, which is absorbed by the skin.

I had gained a couple of kilograms since returning from my travels around the world, and I was also quite run down, catching one cold and barely recovering before a new one would take hold. So when a course of ozone therapy was suggested to me, it seemed like a good idea.

The one immediate benefit that I noticed was that I got a great night’s sleep. I have never been an insomniac, but after my first ozone treatment, I felt that I explored new depths of slumber. When I woke up in the morning, I felt completely rested, and like I had been a motionless dead-weight in my bed all night. In fact, the first couple of times I went for ozone therapy, I needed a nap in the afternoon as well, so soporific were the effects.

Some people report an instant invigoration. After one session of ozone, they are filled with boundless energy and any illnesses are vanquished. I took a bit more time to fully realise the benefits. In the first week I was doing it, I caught a cold, and this cold not only ran its course, but lingered on for about two weeks.

I would perhaps have been inclined to dismiss ozone altogether, except for the fact that I started to experience almost instant weight loss. It was nothing radical – only about half a kilo a week, but it was still enough to justify my return at a time when I felt I was carrying a couple of extra kilos.

About a month after I started the ozone, I also began to eat more healthily and exercise, which helped with the weight loss even more. But in one week when I was too busy to make an ozone appointment, I put a half a kilo back on. So the exercise and health food were certainly bolstered by the ozone therapy.

The next thing that happened was that my skin cleared up. Again, it wasn’t particularly bad to start with, but I would get the occasional break-out of blemishes along my jaw line or on my temples. Those cleared up completely, and my skin started to look vibrant and glowing.

But, after two months of doing ozone fairly regularly, the real benefits started to show. As we made our way into winter, when the nights are long and the days are cold, everyone else started to get colds and flu. I, usually the first to get laid down with any bug going around, stayed in the pink of health, despite repeated exposure to sniffling friends and relatives.

Of course, everything else is in balance too – I’m eating healthily and exercising as well as sitting in the ozone tank. But among the other benefits of ozone is the fact that it helps the body to detox, and so it creates a synergy with all the other healthy things I’m doing in my life. I feel great.

And there’s nothing wrong with going and sitting in a warm box for 45 minutes in the middle of winter either.
