Don’t Rush That Bikini Body

It’s that time of the year when those diet pills and potion products start sounding extra alluring.  All we want is the let’s shake it off quick approach.  But don’t be fooled it’s these quick fixes that are the start of our real problems.  Drastic diets and quick fixes change your metabolism which means you might win the battle, but land up losing the war.

Here’s why:  When you restrict and deprive your body, the first thing it loses is water.  On a scale that looks fabulous but in reality all that’s happened is that it takes a loss of only 2-3% of water in order for our metabolism to slow down.  But hey isn’t a fast metabolism exactly what I need to burn calories.  Exactly!  That’s the point.  But it gets worse.  The very next thing you lose is muscle.  Again it looks wonderful on your scale but guess what muscle weighs three times was fat does and the more muscle you lose the slower your metabolism again.  So even though the scale makes you want to jump for joy – all you’ve succeeded in doing is to increase your percentage body fat and here’s the rub.  The higher your percentage body fat, the more efficient your body has become at storing food as fat.  So you’ve won the battle (you’ve lost weight) but you’re definitely in the process of losing the war.

When the fad diet fails you - and it definitely will - and you go back to your old eating patterns, your metabolism will still be retarded and you’ll be eating all the things that weren’t on your diet plan (all the things high in fats and sugars and of course calories).  Slow metabolism + high calories = a fabulous recipe for weight gain!
