Confidence – The Most Attractive Quality You Can PossessMy life has been dominated by the topic of 'how to be successful'. I have read and researched a lot on the topic and have found that there are similar underlying principles among all of the books and articles. So I thought it would be quite useful to filter out what I think are the major ingredients of success. In this first instalment we look at confidence.

I believe that success is an attitude... it is not reaching a certain point, but rather the journey to that point! The principles I am going to cover are in no order of importance, but rather they all work together within the successful individual!

I've heard on more than one occasion that confidence is the most attractive quality which one can possess. It makes sense though, as people like people who like themselves. Don’t misinterpret my point as saying you should be vain – I am referring to liking who you are, and feeling comfortable with yourself, which incidentally is the definition of confidence and more specifically self-confidence. There is a confidence cycle that exists, so that if you like yourself, others will like you too, which will make you even more self-confident and as a result even more attractive to others, and the cycle continues.

This then goes to show that confidence fluctuates based on many factors, but if confidence fluctuates based on influence by other factors, then surely you can use this to your advantage to make yourself more confident? Aha, now we see the light! Confidence is not something that the 'fortunate' are born with; it is something that can be harnessed in each of us!

I’ll talk about how to be more confident later, but now let’s get back to the topic of success and more importantly how confidence will help you be successful!

Paul McKenna, in his book Instant Confidence, said that: “Confidence is more than just a positive feeling in your body - it's an attitude and approach to life that leads to success, motivation and new possibilities.” Confidence equips one to set goals, chase them and achieve them. Let's say for example that your goal is to run your own successful business... once you've researched and increased your knowledge on your chosen venture, you will be a lot more confident about opening your business.

Then when you've successfully completed your first few jobs, your confidence again increases which will allow you to close more deals and the cycle goes on. Eventually your confidence will cause your clients to be confident in your company which will ensure that they come back... et voila! Success, you've reached your goal... just keep it up!

As you can see confidence is an integral part of success, so let’s look at how to increase yours:

Practice, practice, practice
To become more confident at something, keep doing it. As the adage goes "practice makes perfect". The more you do something the more confident you become in your ability.

Never criticise yourself
Criticism kills confidence. Your inner voice is one of your most powerful tools so be sure to use it to praise yourself for good, and not criticise the bad.

Hold your head high
A simple change in your posture can give you an instant confident boost! Straighten your back and lift your head... don't you feel more confident already?

Visualise
Another extremely powerful tool is visualisation. Close your eyes and see yourself being more confident, what would you do, how would you act if you were more confident. If you are nervous about a situation, visualise being totally confident in that situation.

Like yourself
It is so important to like who you are and respect yourself. Everyone is unique and nobody is perfect! Appreciate your talents and strengths. Do your best to be the best you can be!

Exercise regularly
Not only will this improve your health and appearance in the long run, but this will also make you feel good.

Have fun
If there is something you really enjoy doing, then do it. Enjoy life to the full and everything else (including confidence) will follow!

Be optimistic
The more optimistic you are, the more confident you become because nothing can faze you.
Concentrate only on the positive and your confidence will grow!

This concludes my instalment on confidence. I hope you found it informative and helpful. Next month’s instalment with deal with passion.
