Taking Control – My Personal Journey to SuccessDo you ever feel like your life is spiralling out of control? Do you see yourself as an outsider in your own life? Are your emotions all over the place, so much so that you feel like you're going through puberty all over again? Well, this was me not so long ago!

Now let me clear up any misinterpretations before I continue... I think that everyone is allowed to leave the boundaries of sanity and logic now and then... in fact this is probably necessary to retain your sanity and logic. But when the 'now and then' turns into days and weeks, and you feel like an uninvited guest within your own reality, then it is probably a good indication that you need to take control of your life!

I can recall countless occasions where I have asked how people were doing, and they replied: "I am getting by" or "Well I'm still alive!" or "Don't even ask...my life sucks!" and when I further pressed the issue of what was bothering them, it was usually how much they hated their job, or how their partner doesn't understand them, or that they have no money. I could go on but I'm sure you get the idea by now, the splinter in their skin usually revolved around how they were a victim of circumstance.

Those troublesome teenage years
I can identify with this behaviour pattern all too well for it had reared its ugly head through many of my teenage years, and conveniently decided not to leave as I approached my early twenties. I guess it was just easier to blame everything else for my dissatisfaction with my life.

Napoleon Hill stated in his book 'Think and Grow Rich' that we have been given complete control over but one thing, and that is our thoughts, and our thoughts shape our reality, therefore we can do or have anything we want, simply by 'thinking' it into existence! I read this and took it in, but it wasn't until a few years later that its significance would change my life!

For a long time things in my life weren't as I wanted them to be. I had ups and downs but unfortunately there were more downs, and they outshone the ups. I found myself relying heavily on luck which is as crazy as my friend whose plan for financial freedom is to win the lottery! I reached a point where I new I needed change, but at the same time, I couldn't even adequately describe the problem... Then on my 22nd birthday my mom gave me the book 'Your Destiny Switch' by Peggy McColl where I found the perfect description of my problem: "Emotional Control" or rather the lack thereof.

Getting in control
It was all plain sailing from there as I now knew what I wanted to fix, and I had the burning desire to do so. If you are familiar with Napoleon Hill's work you will know that once you have combined a definite purpose with a burning desire for its attainment, nothing can stop you from achieving your purpose! I set myself a goal of gaining more emotional control in 21 days. I detailed exactly what it would be like to be in control, and why it was so important to me, and each day I recorded my progress in a journal!

The results were astonishing, and I had achieved my goal ahead of the time-scale, but in hindsight I now see that the most important aspect of what transpired was the actual decision to take control of my emotions and ultimately my life. I can't control what happens... but I can control my reaction to events. My life can be exactly as I want it, and it now is, because I took responsibility, and began manifesting the life of my dreams.

I hope that you too will decide to take control of your happiness and become your own genie, making your own dreams, as well as the dreams of those around you come true! Abracadabra... and good luck!

Simple Steps to take your life back

1. Make a conscious decision to take your life back
This is the most important thing you can do, once you have made the decision to take control, the rest follows naturally. This is almost like a military coup within yourself where your negative, self-effacing beliefs are overthrown.

2. Affirm to yourself that you're the boss
No matter what happens always remember that you’re in control. In my bedroom I have a wall of inspiration, where I have stuck reminders in big bold letters that ‘I am the creator’, ‘I am in control’ meaning that I have to go after what I want, and make it happen!

3. Stop worrying and start living
Dale Carnegie had it right years ago, when he wrote this brilliant book! If something is out of your control, keep it out of your consciousness. Worrying will achieve nothing positive, so either do something about your concern, or don't think about it at all!

4. Trust Yourself
Napoleon Hill stated that successful people reach decisions promptly and change their minds very hesitantly, if at all. So trust that you will be able to deal with whatever life throws at you at the appropriate time, and make the most of the status quo!

5. Realise that failure and defeat are temporary
Look for the seed of benefit that lies in every failure, and you will deprive failure of its power over you. If there is a pothole on the road, don't turn back, just go around it!

6. Change what you don't like
Now that you are in control, you are well on your way to creating the life of your dreams. If there are aspects of your life which you are dissatisfied with, replace them with that which brings you happiness.
