Nia Jam-4-Joy Print
Monday, 16 June 2008, 09:00 - 11:30

Dance And Help Out… With The Gauteng Nia CommunityCelebrate Youth Day –and contribute to the refugees of the current Xenophobia crisis.
Imagine going to a place where you can dance without being judged, move without being hit on, and at the same time be surrounded by magnificent music that feeds the body and the soul. Imagine being able to go to a place and dance for two and a half hours where no one cares what you wear, who you are, what you look like, or how you move. Imagine being surrounded by lovely people who love to move their bodies to find joy, health and wellness – people who love getting fit with the Nia Technique. The Nia Jam-4-Joy sessions at Studio Kairos in Dunkeld West were created to provide this opportunity to like-minded people.

Nia Jam-4-Joy sessions generally take place on a Friday evening , but this month, because it’s winter and there is a public holiday on the horizon, the Jam is taking place on a Monday morning (16 June). This particular Jam is being used as an opportunity for the Nia community in Joburg to dance for a cause.

The intention of a Nia Jam is to bring many Nia teachers and students together to have a good time “jamming”, to explore the diversity of Nia, and to attract new people to experience Nia for the first time in a relaxed, fun space. Sometimes we use the Jams as a way to raise funds for charities. We have donated money to Cotlands and raised money to help Forest Town school for the disabled last year. This time we are gathering contributions for a cause that is affecting us all.

For two and a half hours, we dance Nia. We enjoy the diverse mix of different energy from many Nia teachers, as well as an eclectic mix of music. We have between thirty and sixty people attending the Jams, which creates a fabulous, fun outing for the whole family.

There is food and drinks available at the pub next door, and fresh green lawns outside the hall where people sit and rest in between, or partners watch the dancing from the sidelines (that is, if they haven’t been tempted to get onto their feet and start joining in).

The Nia community is growing and the Jams are a great way to connect all the Nia teachers and students in the Gauteng area so that we can feel part of a bigger whole that is finding health in body, mind, emotions and spirit, through experiencing the Joy of Movement.

Anyone is welcome to attend these Jams – no experience of Nia is necessary.
